EAA Members for a Green New Deal

EAA did not usher in a new decade with a fresh start towards member empowerment in major decisions that affect member dues. In early January, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) directed the Engineers and Architects Association (EAA) to support an independent expenditure of $15,000 in your member dues for John Lee. This is without the EAA Board of Governors (BoG) yet taking a formal endorsement in the Council District 12 race, a fair hearing from the leading candidates, and in the face of many members' concerns for John Lee's positions on climate change and the homelessness crises, let alone his past troubling sexual harassment allegations. This strikes against what many feel is an improper encroachment in EAA affairs where members are increasingly raising alarms on how EAA political contributions are made, and could potentially turn people away from union membership post-Janus U.S.Court Decision.
Meanwhile, EAA's Ad-Hoc Political Action Committee (PAC) heard from the other leading candidate Dr. Loraine Lundquist, and based on her commitment to get in the weeds with EAA members to find meaningful solutions to the City's many challenges, the PAC voted to endorse her campaign. As a climate scientist and professor, Loraine has the commitment to lead the City to transition to a self-sufficient city run on clean energy. Whether or not the Green New Deal is your top priority, we need a leader in City Hall that is willing to solve tough problems that extend beyond short-term political cycles.
The EAA BoG is expected to vote on the Ad-Hoc PAC's recommendations at the February 12th meeting, and is under great pressure from IBEW to support John Lee with your member dues. If you believe that a donation of this amount is not appropriate for a candidate with a questionable record on broadly held member values, the three most effective things you can do is write your Board members (just copy and paste in a message below to your Governor(s) webpage), attend the February 12th BOG meeting, and to urge your fellow EAA member work friends to also voice their concerns to the BoG.
You can politely tell EAA BoG that whoever EAA endorses, members are already supporting Loraine anyway. Wouldn't it be better if they spent our well earned EAA dues accordingly and joined us?

Dear Governor _______________________
As a dues-paying member of EAA, I ask that you deny IBEW's request to contribute our hard earned dues to John Lee, and instead act on your own Ad-Hoc PAC recommendations and endorse Dr. Loraine Lundquist for City Council!
As dedicated civil servants, Dr. Lundquist speaks to our values of service, and will stand with workers to help lead the city to transition to a green economy. Regardless of your decision, I will walk for Loraine for City Council. It would be a shame for our EAA dues be spent against our greater interests.
Please decline IBEW's request, and side with the members!
